Terry Edwards - Terry Edwards remembers The Cure
Originally intended to come out on vinyl in the mid-90s, Terry Edwards remembers The Cure was left in the vaults after someone in the Cure’s Fiction organisation vetoed the release at the eleventh hour...
Although a handful of white label 12” singles escaped & the late, great John Peel aired one or two tracks, this has remained something of a legendary release, largely unheard until now, that is, thanks to the copyright restrictions being relaxed & the advent of download-only releases.
Sartorial is proud to present Friday I’m in love, played in a style hovering somewhere between East Africa and Guadaloupe, In between days with a thumping Wham-esque backbeat and Killing an Arab as a disjointed dub-cut. The fourth track is a reworking of an Edwards original, first heard on Terry Edwards & the Scapegoats’ Harlem Nocturne EP, brought to life in this 21st Century remix with new, atmospheric guitars. Show me a sane man & I will cure him for you is psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s famous tongue-in-cheek quote from his twilight years.
Terry got to work with some very high calibre musicians on the Cure covers. It was recorded by Andy Metcalfe (The Soft Boys, Squeeze) - he also sang backing vocals & played toy koto. The drums were programmed with help from Stephen Irvine (Lloyd Cole & Del Amitri), and the final mixes were co-produced with Anthony Moore (Slapp Happy, Pink Floyd and much, much more.
And - in case you’re wondering - the cheesy photo of Terry in a yellow v-neck, brandishing a pair of spectacles is a spoof of a 60s knitting pattern illustration!
