Description

Dear Thief - Oh Yeah

Dear Thief have come a long way from their debut EP and 2011 album Under Archway (Orchestra Pit/Sartorial). This new collection of songs explores a heavier side of the band’s sound - its hard-grooving, rhythmical directness have led critics to compare Dear Thief to bands like Shellac and The Jesus Lizard.

The songs of Oh Yeah give the impression of restless transition, from the fatigued insomnia of Hotel through to the haunting resignation of Ground Pull, whilst constantly maintaining the momentum with heavy, melodic riffs and churning grooves.

The rhythm section of bassist Emma Bennett and drummer Tim Greany often overwhelms the distant subaqueous vocals of Yusuf B’layachi, who in turn wilfully aids and abets them with loud, insistent and incisive guitarwork. There are, however, intimate moments, when the band conjures a hypnotic swirl of syncopated patterns with B’layachi’s storytelling setting the pace.

Recorded by John Hannon at ‘No’ the recordings capture improvised studio jams alongside well-crafted songs, giving Oh Yeah a compelling mix of clarity and impulsive energy.
