Nitwood - Now Is The Winter Of Our Discotheque
Led by Simon Charterton (Higsons, Zook) on drums & vocals plus long-term co-writer Richard Duguid on keyboards, Nitwood have expanded their sound by employing two bassists, John Pope and Colin Young. Stalwart of the London improvising scene, Ian R Watson (Treecreepers, Scapegoats) guests on Salvation & Motivation whilst guitarist Spike Williams (Weekend) weaves his magic on Aon and Do it now
Salvation is a slice of minimalist punk funk, reminiscent of ‘80s New York/Norwich, lyrically racing to the point and refusing to budge.
Aon builds and builds from a bass-heavy groove with a robotic voiceover to open out into a beautiful, guitar-driven soundscape with Duguid’s keyboards subtly making everything else sound great.
Do It Now Disturbingly comforting pseudo-advertising spiel which delivers a hard sell with a seductive ‘lounge’ backing designed to make you say 'yes'.
Motivation witnesses a controlled trumpet/keyboard explosion while a hypnotic bass and self-help vocal
mantra attempt to calm things down.
Orbiting The Right Planet (See Why dub mix). Jem Moore (Serious Drinking/Scapegoats) has his enigmatic vocals put through the space-echo box to create a glorious dub duet with Bill Denton’s plaintive harmonica.
