Department S - My Coo Ca Choo Remixed
Micko Westmoreland’s remix comes swathed in a sequin glow that completes a circle spanning four decades and three eras – Glam, New Wave and Electro. Micko Westmoreland’s eminently danceable remix is a stomping floor filler infused with electronics. Filmic elements mix electro-acoustically keeping a steady four to the floor beat. No surprise that in a former life Micko, in collaboration with his filmmaker brother Wash, has scored soundtracks for post-modern gay porno movies, the double Sundance winner Quinceañera (Echo Park L.A.), and appeared alongside Ewan McGregor in Todd Haynes’s Glam Rock epic Velvet Goldmine.
Mr Midi Remix
Released at the same time is an electro-pop version of My Coo Ca Choo by Essex born remixer Mr Midi. Mr Midi couples happy-sad melodies and beats which are aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Mister Midi's remix CV includes Robots in Disguise, The B52's, Komputer and Clearlake.
Department S formed in 1980. By March 1981 they had a record deal with Jake Riviera’s Demon label, had recorded a Peel Session and had a hit single with ‘Is Vic There?’. European tours and a string of TV appearances followed, but it all became just a bit too serious and the band quit after signing to Stiff. Dept S’s debut LP ‘Sub-Stance’ was belatedly released in 1993. In 2007 the band reformed and released their cover of Alvin Stardust’s ‘My Coo Ca Choo’. Original members guitarist Michael Herbage, drummer Stuart Mizon and synth player Eddie Roxy were joined by Bedders from Madness on bass, and Gallon Drunk sax player and boss of Sartorial Terry Edwards. Eddie Roxy is on vocals while one of the original punk-rockers Michelle Brigandage is on backing vocals.
