Description

Terry Edwards and the Scapegoats - Yesterday's Zeitgeist

Released on CD in 1999, Yesterday’s Zeitgeist is a 15 track live album culled from performances in England, Denmark and America. It features Terry Edwards with The Scapegoats, his regular solo outfit, The Ska All-Stars and the first recordings of his collaborations with No-Wave celebrity Lydia Lunch.

The Ska All-Stars include Madness members Mark Bedford (bass) and Chris Foreman (guitar), plus Mike Kearsey, Jason McDermid, Jason Bruer (ex-Jools Holland horn section), Martin Ling & Jem Moore (ex-Serious Drinking), Dave Bryant (BUtterfield 8, Happy End) and Louis Vause (Crunch!, Hackney 5'O).

I Don't Know Where It's Coming From (but I dig it) was Julian Cope's description of a tune he wanted Terry to add horns to. "Good lyrics", thought the brass maestro, and promptly wrote the song. (The Cope song was 'Baby, Let's Play Vet' by the way.)

Edwards has covered four songs by The Fall during his career. Container Drivers is the only one that Mark E Smith doesn't like.

The first track of Yesterday's Zeitgeist, Disobedience, heralded the opening of Blast First's eclectic Disobey club. Edwards also performed there with Moonshake & Phill Niblock. Later events featured Peter Brotzman, Bruce Gilbert, Spaceheads, Blue Humans & George Melly.

Reviews

"Terry Edwards - a man known for his dexterity on saxophones of all types, his pocket trumpet and his keen sense of irony" - Mike Bradley The Times
